Engagement
consultation notes
Dialogue is the key
Change makes people nervous - especially if it is seen as imposed from outside. It's important to be open and make consultation meaningful.
Not every fear can be allayed but informed groups and individuals who have access to the facts will feel better equipped to respond.
Keep the channels open
Don't make the mistake of thinking that consultation is a one-off event. Keep the dialogue going online and on social media. Provide regular updates at each key stage and invite comment.
Listening adds value
There is nothing quite like local knowledge. There are plenty of instances where community feedback at meetings or through surveys has contributed to improved project viability via design changes and/or cost avoidance.
Network continuity
Encourage clients or organisation to maintain post-project communication. There is inherent value to be gained (both future and real-time) from sustaining a network of key community contacts.
